Surgery Master Class Uses Google Glass Technology

Quirón Teknon Hospital has used innovative Google Glass technology to transmit a surgical master class to students in the International Postgraduate Programme in Orthognathic Surgery and Surgical Orthodontics at the Universitat Internacional de Catalunya (UIC). The jaw-lengthening procedure was carried out on Tuesday, 15 July 2014, by Dr. Federico Hernández Alfaro, a specialist in maxillofacial surgery at Quirón Teknon Hospital. Dr. Hernández Alfaro is also the Director of the Department of Oral Medical-Surgical Pathology and a full professor at the UIC.

Everything seen by the wearer of the innovative Google Glass device can be transmitted to a network of smartphones, which enabled the eleven postgraduate students from five countries in Europe and the Americas to follow the entire procedure in real time from the surgeon’s eye view.

This method of professional development training is part of an initiative led by Dr. Hernández Alfaro and the UIC’s Faculty of Dentistry to facilitate online access to practical training. Until now, professionals and international students had to travel to Barcelona to witness a cutting-edge surgical procedure of this kind.
