Thirty Humanities students pay a visit to the sites of Pompeii and Herculaneum
Thirty students from the Bachelor's Degree in Humanities and Cultural Studies have just got back from this year's study trip to Naples. They visited the sites of Pompeii and Herculaneum as well as the National Archaeological Museum and the Capodimonte Museum in Naples. They were joined by Classic Philosophy lecturer Bernat Torres, as well as History of Art lecturer and dean of the Faculty, Judith Urbano. They tell us how it went.
“On the first day, we stayed in Naples next to Garibaldi train station. We took a visit to Pompeii to see the ancient Roman city buried by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD, and then we headed to see Herculaneum, where the Villa dei Papiri is located”.
"We organised a themed evening of rhapsody and music, reading texts by Philodemus of Gàdara, a friend of Piso, father-in-law of Julius Caesar, who created the library of the Villa dei Papiri. Filodem is an Epicurean thinker who produces his own work, especially epigrams. We read five epigrams with translations by Jaume Pòrules, commented on them and then added piano music (in the hotel and in most public spaces in Naples, there are pianos set up to play)”.
"In Naples we went to the National Archaeological Museum and the Capodimente art gallery. We visited countless churches and places in the city, as well as several local castles”.
“An amazing trip”.
