Two projects led by researchers from the Area of Periodontology receive grants from the International Team for Implantology and the Osteology Foundation

The aid, awarded by two of the most prestigious international bodies in the field of dentistry, represent a recognition of the high-quality research undertaken within the Faculty of Dentistry’s Area of Periodontology

The research group led by Dr Ettore Amerio, an alumnus of the Master’s Degree in Periodontology who is currently completing his doctoral degree, recently received a grant from the International Team for Implantology (ITI) and the Osteology Foundation to develop, in conjunction with the University of Extremadura, two projects concerned primarily with analysing whether tobacco and implant surface increase anti-inflammatory responses in cases of peri-implantitis.

More specifically, the project entitled “Influence of smoking habit on macrophage polarization at implants affected by peri-implantitis”, funded by the ITI grant, will investigate the link between smoking and macrophage polarisation in implants affected by peri-implantitis. On the other hand, the project “Influence of Implant Surface on Macrophage Polarization at Implants Affected by Peri-Implantitis”, funded through the grant from the Osteology Foundation, will analyse the role that the surface of the affected implant plays.

Both projects, which also involve Dr José Nart, head of the Area of Periodontology, and Dr Alberto Monje, a lecturer in this Area, will be carried out in the Faculty of Dentistry at UIC Barcelona, where the teams with take biological and microbiological samples around implants affected by peri-implantitis, which will be subsequently analysed at the University of Extremadura.
