Two student groups from the faculty win the 12th UIC Barcelona Cross-Disciplinary Sustainability Workshop

“Fashion’s Environmental Crisis” and “Green Rain”, both projects led by students from the Faculty of Economic and Social Sciences, have come first in their respective categories.

The Faculty of Economic and Social Sciences at UIC Barcelona has played a lead role in the university’s 12th Cross-Disciplinary Sustainability Workshop, which this year was titled: “Caring for the planet amidst a climate and health crisis: solutions and alliances for simultaneously protecting both our health and the environment”.

In the first group, students from the Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration and Management, Pablo Morillo and Alejandro Miralta, won first prize in the Barcelona Campus’ practical workshop category with their project "Fashion’s Environmental Crisis". They reflect on the lack of sustainable practices in the fashion industry and propose solutions and changes that both companies and individuals can implement to minimise their impact on the planet.

In the second, students from the Master’s Degree in Business Administration and Production Systems, Ilaria Prandi, Giacomo Bima, Lorenzo Jammoul, Diego di Giacomo, Antonio Borzi and Maria Anna Simone, were awarded the extraordinary prize for master's degree students, a category that was introduced for the first time in this year’s Cross-disciplinary Workshop. Theprizewas presented in recognition of their project “Green Rain”, in which they propose to install green roofs at the university to reap the environmental and sustainability benefits this system has to offer: saving energy, reusing rain water, reducing noise and environmental pollution, among many others.

The Cross-Disciplinary Sustainability Workshop is an annual event open to the whole university community, exploring issues related to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by bringing together multiple disciplines. All UIC Barcelona students can carry out research projects linked to the workshop’s theme and submit their results in the form of scientific poster or workshop as part of a research competition.
