Two years on, Health Promotion Day returns to the Sant Cugat Campus

Second-year students from the UIC Barcelona Bachelor's Degree in Nursing organised the 9th edition of this event under the theme “What happens when you overdo it?” And why? To demonstrate and promote the role of prevention and care, through different practical workshops on cardiopulmonary resuscitation, alcohol, drugs, bullying and social media to students in their third and fourth year of secondary school, upper-secondary school and on vocational training courses.

This 9th edition, which took place on 5 March, involved 72 boys and girls from upper secondary school, vocational training courses and, for the first time, also third- and fourth-year students from upper secondary school. This year, due to the pandemic, the capacity of the activities was limited compared to previous years. About 70 volunteers from the Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing, as well as other students and staff from the Department, made the day possible, which was held in collaboration with the Medical Emergency Service (SEM).

As in previous years, the Day began outside the Campus with a dramatised situation that led to the start of a series of practical workshops led by the Nursing students. The practical workshops aimed to show participants the risks of alcohol and drug use, as well as the dangers of misusing social networks and how to act if they come across cases of bullying.

This year, as a novelty, participants were asked to complete a survey and rate the day, the results of which were very positive and nearly 90% said they would absolutely recommend it to other young people their age.

In addition, the survey has helped to show the shift in the boys’ and girls’ perception of the different subjects covered, before and after the day, making them more aware of the importance of acquiring healthy habits. In this regard, the organisers highlight that 100% of the young people attending the activity consider alcohol to be a drug after the activity, compared to the initial 13%. As well as the fact that 60.4% of the participants would dare to report a case of bullying, compared to 29.2% of the young people who would have done so before the workshop.

Over its nine editions, the Health Promotion Day has reached more than 2,370 young people from all over Catalonia and has allowed students on the Bachelor's Degree in Nursing to put their knowledge of community nursing into practice.
