UIC Barcelona commemorates Fabra Year

At the initiative of the Institute for Multilingualism, UIC Barcelona recently hosted the exhibit "Pompeu Fabra: A Complete Language", a travelling exhibition created by the Directorate-General for Language Policy to celebrate Fabra Year. The exhibition, which explores Fabra’s contribution to the Catalan language, was on display in the entrance to both the Alpha and Beta buildings from Tuesday 25 September to Wednesday 3 October.

In addition to the exhibition, which this year has also been seen at Arts Santa Mònica and a number of other centres, libraries and universities, UIC Barcelona also organised an Instagram competition that posed questions based on the exhibition about Fabra’s life and work. All participants were entered into a draw for a copy of La nova normativa a la butxaca [Pocket version of the new regulations], by Neus Nogué, a prize claimed by Bachelor’s Degree in Dentistry student Ariadna Vidiella.

This was the first activity organised by UIC Barcelona as part of Fabra Year, which commemorates the life and work of the most distinguished Catalan linguist and grammarian on the 150th anniversary of his birth and the 100th anniversary of the publication of Gramàtica catalana [Catalan Grammar], in 2018.

The next Fabra Year activity scheduled to take place at UIC Barcelona is the conference “From Fabra to the GIEC: The Model for Catalan-Speaking Universities”, which will be given by Neus Nogué, lecturer at the University of Barcelona, and will be held on 16 November during the Vives Forum for Language Specialists, which will be hosted by UIC Barcelona.
