UIC Barcelona is committed to female talent and the number of female scientists working in research at this University is growing
The institution recognises the contribution of women and supports any effort to promote careers that are a source of inspiration for the future
For another consecutive year, UIC Barcelona joins in with the celebrations for the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, held every 11 February. The institution is committed to female talent, supporting women as they play a greater role in the present and future of science. It also emphasises the importance of women's vocations in science through awareness-raising initiatives, such as the video-testimony of female scientists from various disciplines –medicine, dentistry, psychiatry and psychology, education and economic and social sciences– who are pursuing their research careers at the University.
The video shows the University's social commitment, the policies promoted and the culture in favour of female talent, highlighting the role of women in research, as well as the importance and impact on society of being a researcher and having a successful career in such a competitive sector.
The vice rector for Research, Innovation and Knowledge Transfer at UIC Barcelona, Cristina Monforte, affirms that “commemorating this international day is fundamental. Supporting female talent and raising awareness of the scientific vocation is a cross-disciplinary policy of our University”, where female bachelor’s degree and postgraduate students represent 63.5% of the student body (2020-2021 academic year).
As for teaching and research staff, 51% of researchers at UIC Barcelona are women who participate in research groups in fields such as the social and legal sciences (69%), the health sciences (57%), the arts and humanities (50%) engineering and architecture (26%). In addition to these figures, 56% of competitive research projects are led by women.
“These positive percentages, due to their evolution and growth in recent years, encourage the University to continue making headway in this respect”, says Esther Jiménez, vice rector for University Community, and are deemed highly relevant by the UIC Barcelona Equality Office, a body that reports to the vice rector's office and is devoted to promoting equal opportunities and women's careers in all academic fields, incorporating the principle of non-discrimination on the basis of sex or maternity.
