Moreover, six of the Spanish universities are public, while UIC Barcelona is the only private university institution that succeeded in qualifying.
The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU, or ShanghaiRanking) is one of the world's most renowned rankings. Each year, the ARWU ranks over 1,800 universities and publishes the results of those in the top 1,000. It began publishing the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS) in 2009.
Some 1,800 universities feature in the ShanghaiRanking’s GRAS 2021, chosen from among 4,000 universities across the world ranked in 54 academic fields and divided into five fields: Natural sciences, engineering, life sciences, medical sciences and social sciences. The Ranking uses the following indicators to measure the universities’ performance: The number of published articles, the percentage of citations, the number of appearances in international journals, their presence in prestigious journals and the number of researchers that have been presented with awards.
