UIC Barcelona Joins in Demonstrations of Solidarity and Support for University of Garissa Victims

Acting on behalf of the Universitat Internacional de Catalunya, Pere Alavedra, Rector of the UIC, recently joined the Conference of Rectors of Spanish Universities (CRUE) in signing a statement of support for the victims of the attacks perpetrated on Thursday, 2 April 2015, at the University of Garissa in Kenya, where 152 people, mostly students, were killed.

“The Conference of Rectors of Spanish Universities wishes to express its support and solidarity with the victims of the attacks carried out at the University of Garissa, in Kenya, as well as with their families, friends and classmates, and with all the people of Kenya.

“Like society as a whole, the University is and must be a place for freedom of thought and freedom of belief. Thus, the community of universities condemns, in the strongest language possible, any act of terror against these fundamental rights, and proclaims that mutual understanding among all citizens, regardless of the faith they profess, must be the principle that underlies democratic coexistence between peoples.”

On Thursday, 9 March 2015, the number of confirmed victims reached 152. Shortly thereafter, in keeping with the CRUE’s statement, the UIC Barcelona showed its “solidarity and rejection of this criminal act by standing in defence of justice and social harmony”. Bearing in mind the Christian humanism that inspires this University, we would like to dedicate our most heartfelt prayers to the victims.
