UIC Barcelona lecturer Víctor Gil, new member of the Pierre Fauchard Academy

At the annual meeting of the Spanish Section of the Pierre Fauchard Academy, held on 18 and 19 October, Víctor Gil, director of the Master's Degree in Gerontology, Special Patients and Oral Medicine, joined the prestigious institution

The meeting was held at the Palacio de Revillagigedo (Gijón) and attended by Dr Lluís Giner, dean of the Faculty of Dentistry at UIC Barcelona; Dr Anna Hospital, lecturer in the legal and forensic field; and Dr Manuel Ribera, lecturer in the area of Gerontology at the Faculty, all of them members of the Spanish Section of the Pierre Fauchard Academy.

In the first part of the annual meeting, the scientific session was held during which the candidates for membership of the prestigious institution gave their entrance lecture. The candidate from the Faculty of Dentistry at UIC Barcelona, Dr Víctor Gil, sponsored by Dr Giner, gave a talk entitled “Teeth or Patients” in which he reflected on the raison d'être of dentistry and its role towards the patient. As Dr Gil explained, “Although we professionals are increasingly specialised in a certain area, you need to take a holistic and comprehensive view of the patient. We must not forget that we are treating patients beyond just their teeth and that we have to look after their general health, instructing our patients on healthy lifestyle habits and promoting good oral hygiene as part of an overall state of good health.”

In the second part of the day, the official investiture ceremony of the new members of the Spanish Section of the Pierre Fauchard Academy took place, where Dr Gil, director of the Master's Degree in Gerontology, Special Patients and Oral Medicine, was joined by his sponsor, Dr Giner. “Being part of the Pierre Fauchard Academy is a great honour, a recognition of my career and a commitment to society,” said Victor Gil. “This recognition also belongs to UIC Barcelona, to my mentors and to my sponsor, for the training and the values they have passed on to me.”

The Pierre Fauchard Academy is made up of 142 sections spread over the United States, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia and totals more than 11,000 scholars. The Spain section of the Pierre Fauchard Academy is the only dental organisation in Spain of this kind and brings together 75 dentists elected from among the professionals who are part of the Spanish Dentistry Association.
