UIC Barcelona nursing students care for over 1,000 people in vulnerable situations in AIDIR units

Since they were opened in 2016, the Nursing Care Teaching and Research (AIDIR) units, located in Barcelona's Ciutat Vella and Parc Sanitari Pere Virgili, have offered a total of 174 activities led by students on the Nursing Degree in which an average of 330 people have participated every year

A total of 74 students from the Nursing Degree have cared for over 1,000 people in vulnerable situations in the two Nursing Care Teaching and Research (AIDIR) units since they were created in 2016. The two centres, coordinated by the Nursing Department, aim to improve health by means of self-care and encouraging a healthy lifestyle. They are also intended to empower nursing students and foster their leadership skills.

Since the project was launched, the two centres have carried out a total of 174 activities, including educational and group sessions, workshops and creating and developing educational materials. By means of these activities, carried out using Health Coaching techniques, the attendees obtain further tools for making decisions about their health, better health training, greater autonomy for self-care, and the development of behavioural, emotional, social and cognitive skills is encouraged. These actions also allow students to develop attitudes of solidarity, sensitivity and social responsibility, and awaken the interest and create awareness of certain needs or situations, in addition to reinforcing human values.

AIDIR Ciutat Vella is a unit aimed at people and families in the area at risk of social exclusion. Specifically, the centre works in collaboration with the Roure Foundation, the Esperança Foundation and other associations in the Barcelona neighbourhood to work towards their reintegration into society or the employment market, create active learning opportunities concerning physical-emotional health and coexistence and contribute to learning basic life skills. This unit receives support from the “la Caixa” Foundation under the campaign "Combating Child Poverty and Social Exclusion 2018", within the scope of its programme for supporting social initiatives. In 2018 it also obtained aid from the Godó Foundation.
