UIC Barcelona obtains Ministry funding to lead a Thematic Network of Biomaterials to Combat Peri-Implantitis
IC Barcelona has obtained funding from the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities (MCIU) - State Research Agency (AEI) to lead the “Thematic Network of Bactericidal Biomaterials to Combat Peri-Implantitis.” The funds are provided within the “State Programme for Knowledge Generation and Scientific and Technological Strengthening of the Research, Development & Innovation System.”
The project team is comprised by researchers from Universitat Jaume I. Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, Universidad de Vigo, Universidad de Extremadura, Universidad de Sevilla, Universidad de Granada and Universidad de Santiago de Compostela. Dr Xavier Gil Rector at UIC is the researcher coordinating the project and Dr Federico Hernández-Algar and Dr José Nart, lecturers at the UIC Faculty of Dentistry, are also part of the team.
As a "Thematic Network", the aim of the project is to create a network to establish strong communication between researchers working on biomaterials with bactericidal functions in oral implantology and clinicians who are investigating different strategies to reduce infection in patients who have been given dental implants.
The actions proposed as part of the project include sharing research between the two different groups, which produces synergies between the two areas. In this way, the clinicians will be present in research projects in the field of biomaterials, so that the research can address real problems. Whereas groups of researchers in biomaterials will study the clinical problems with real examples to bring the solutions closer to reality. It is also proposed to hold an interdisciplinary conference on dental materials.
The project will last for two years and a total funding of € 15,000 has been awarded.
