UIC Barcelona participates in the 7th Research Forum on Gender Equality and Sustainable Development at the University of Alacant

UIC Barcelona participated in the 7th Research Forum of the University Institute of Gender Research (IUIEG) of the University of Alacant last April, with a plenary conference by UIC Barcelona's Director of Cooperation and Sustainable Development, Dr. Silvia Albareda.

The conference, entitled “Implementing Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at university: needs, advances, and challenges”, reflected on university commitment to and support of SDGs and the importance of building permanent collaborative networks to achieve the goals. She also presented a comprehensive picture on the situation of inequality and the gender gap in different sectors, both at international and national levels, while presenting strategies for introducing a gender perspective into university policies, as well as actions for mainstreaming SDGs.

The Forum was organised around three main themes: challenges in gender training processes and SDGs, the challenges in teacher training on gender equality and SDGs, and the remaining challenges for sustainable development in the areas of health, justice, and territory.

SDG 5 is precisely the SDG that promotes equality between women and men, as well as the empowerment of women and girls. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were agreed by the United Nations on 25 September 2015 as part of 2030 Agenda with the objective of caring for the planet, seeking people's progress and prosperity, fostering peaceful societies and building alliances that move toward achieving these objectives.
