UIC Barcelona passes on the baton for the Catalan University Championships of Catalonia to the UOC

A total of 5,554 students and 139 teams from the twelve Catalan universities participated in the 30th edition of the championships during the last academic year. 

The Degree Fair at the Universitat Internacional de Catalunya (UIC Barcelona) hosted the closing session for the 30th edition of the Catalan University Championships.  During the session, the Rector of UIC Barcelona, Dr Xavier Gil, passed on the baton for coordinating the championships to Dr Carles Sigalés, the Vice-Rector for Teaching and Learning in the Open University of Catalonia (UOC).  The event was also presided over by Ivan Tibau, the General Secretary for Sports in the Catalan Government. 

During the last edition of the championships there were important changes such as the interuniversity marathon UNIRUN and an international trip to Torino, Italy. A total of 5,554 students participated, including participants in the marathon (3026 in the male category, 2,496 in the female category and 32 in the mixed category) in total there were 139 teams from the twelve Catalan universities. 

The universities which brought along the most teams were the University of Barcelona, the University of Girona and the University of Lleida. The medal table was dominated by the UB, with 89 medals, followed by the UAB, with 36, the UPF with 33, the UPC with 32, the UdG with 28, the URV with 25, the URL with 21, the UDL with 14, the UVic-UCC with 11, the UAO with 6, the UOC with 6 and UIC Barcelona with 4. 

The overall champions were Pedrona Sierra (UB) and Jaime León (UB). 

During the institutional speeches, Ivan Tibau underlined the boost that has been given to sports in universities by the General Secretariat for Sports. The Rector Dr Xavier Gil gave thanks for the trust placed in our institution to coordinate the championships over the past academic year and wished the UOC the best of luck for this year.
