UIC Barcelona School of Architecture presents the first results of the Puig Foundation Grant for Teaching Innovation
The 4th Puig Foundation Grant for Teaching Innovation was awarded to the winning teaching innovation project in the Aula Magna on 6 February
The winning project proposes involving first- and second-year subjects from the Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture in a new case study. It would allow students to experience what it is like to be assigned a project by a real client (in this case, UIC Barcelona), work in a multidisciplinary environment and transform their design into a functional prototype. The project proposes the development of signage featuring digital graphics to help guide visitors around and improve access to services and facilities, both inside and outside UIC Barcelona.
During the event, UIC Barcelona School of Architecture teachers Diego Navarro and Marta Benages, who are leading the initiative, explained to the participating students the project’s significance and the impact it could have on the University. UIC Barcelona General Manager, Josep Mª Torné, and director of Communication, Mayra García Nieto also took part in the event and contributed their ideas to help guide the future architects.
This project forms part of UIC Barcelona's Teaching Innovation Classroom, which aims to offer teaching staff support in implementing innovative initiatives and projects, as well as help improve all the University's teaching staff's teaching processes.
The aim of the Puig Foundation Grant in Teaching Innovation is to support the work of the University's teaching staff by contributing to innovative projects that pursue teaching excellence and seek to improve students’ learning processes and teaching quality at the University.
Josep Mª Torné and Mayra García Nieto congratulated the students on their work so far, encouraging them and offering their own opinion. "This project is a fantastic aid to help visitors find their way around. It is very interesting because you can see the results of your work being played out in real time", said Torné.
Mayra García Nieto emphasised that digital graphics can help materialise an idea, but that it is important to understand what they aim to achieve and their target audience: "I want us to always have one eye on the future, and I would encourage you to think about the technology that can help you".
Then, students Dominika Vilinova, Mara Cristian and Alessia Achim gave a short presentation of their work. "I tried to imagine someone who has just arrived at the School of Architecture, and looked for the most complicated parts of the building," said Vilinova. Alessia Achim focused her project on the library, while Mara Cristian decided to use photography. "I walked around the school taking pictures. This project made me realise how difficult it can be to do something simple", said Achim.
