The UIC Barcelona teams did well on the first day of the Catalan University Championships
Eight teams from UIC Barcelona and a total of 101 sportspeople participated in the first day of the Catalan University Championships (CCU) 2016-2017 in teams. These included football, futsal, basketball, rugby and volleyball teams which faced the rest of the Catalan universities in the group stage. The event was organised by Abat Oliba University, and was held between 15 and 29 November.
In relation to UIC Barcelona it is important to point out the strong debut by the men’s futsal team with a win, a draw and a loss; the men’s rugby team gained two victories out of the three games they played. With the second day still ahead of them, both teams look like they have plenty of opportunities to go into the semi-finals. The men’s football team also managed a draw against the UPC and will play for classification at the second day of the championships in February, against the URL and the UPF.
The situation for the two basketball teams and the women's volleyball team is more complicated. All three lost their first games but on the second day of the championships they will have the chance to overcome this and try for a third or fourth group place. Finally, the Rhinas Rugby team lost their 5 games, which up to 14 new players participated in. For many of them this was their first experience, but they had an impeccable attitude.
The second day of the championships will take place on 31 January and the final will be on 16 March at the La Mar Bella Municipal Sports Complex (CEM), in Barcelona.
