UIC Barcelona, the university that has contributed the most to regional development, according to the CYD University Ranking

For the second consecutive year UIC Barcelona is the top university in terms of the largest contribution to regional development, according to the CYD University Ranking.  The university has jumped up seven places and is now at number 17 out of the 73 participating Spanish universities.

On Wednesday 22 May, the Knowledge and Development Foundation (CYD) presented its fifth annual CYD Ranking, which analyses Spanish universities on the basis of institutional indicators and by field of knowledge. The indicators are grouped into five aspects: teaching and learning, research, knowledge transfer, international outlook and contribution to regional development.

UIC Barcelona stands out in this ranking as the top university in terms of contributing to regional development and does so for the second year running. To measure this indicator, this raking takes the following aspects into account: in-company work placements in the region, regional publications, regional research funds and publications via regional companies.

On the other hand, in terms of overall results for universities, UIC Barcelona is in 17th place out of a total of 73 participating Spanish universities, so it has therefore moved up 6 places as compared to last year. This is due to perceived improvements in two areas in relation to the last academic year. “Teaching and learning” where UIC Barcelona is now in the top 20, and “International Outlook” where it has now moved to position 29.

The 2019 CYD Ranking, as in past editions, was generated in cooperation with U-Multirank. The CYD Ranking implements the same methodological principles as far as preparation and the majority of indicators are concerned as U-Multirank. However, it also uses other indicators adapted to the Spanish higher education system. The CYD Ranking is independent and fully financed by the Knowledge and Development Foundation.

For this edition, the results published make reference to 23 fields of knowledge and 2.522 degree programmes at 73 universities, thereby representing 90 % of the 81 Spanish universities currently teaching undergraduate courses. Of this number, 48 are public and 25 private.

*The UIC Barcelona data used by the CYD Foundation to work on the ranking was provided by the Office for Statistical Data and Rankings. The office, set up in October, is dependent on the university’s General Secretariat and is responsible for the general university data that affects the rankings through the UNEIX IT system, as well as other general surveys originating from the Ministry for Education and other public institutions.  The office also provides support to manage data for surveys, rankings, reports and specific lists received by any other department in the university.
