UIC Barcelona will offer up beds to more than 200 intensive care patients

The Sant Cugat campus will host more than 200 patients from the University General Hospital of Catalonia’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU)

Going one step further in their commitment to society, and especially to healthcare centres and workers, UIC Barcelona has offered its Sant Cugat campus facilities to the University General Hospital of Catalonia, located within the hospital building.

Whilst we await the peak of the infection curve, the Catalan health system will be able to add to its usual 600 ICU beds with 200 more that are to be set up at our Sant Cugat campus for patients suffering from COVID-19.

“Our Sant Cugat campus, home to the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, has adapted its facilities to be able to help hospitals attend to the growing number of patients”, explains Xavier Gil, rector of the University.

In line with the advice issued by the healthcare authorities, UIC Barcelona will devote 1,000 m2 of the Advanced Integral Simulation Centre, new spaces at the Faculty of Education and other parts of the campus to the ICU at University General Hospital of Catalonia.

This is the latest in a list of several initiatives launched by the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, including one to supply healthcare supplies and protective clothing to hospitals this week, and not to mention the many students from the Bachelor's Degree in Medicine, Bachelor's Degree in Nursing and Bachelor's Degree in Psychology, who have been volunteering to help people in need.
