UIC Open House for First-Year Students' Families

The UIC opened its doors to families of first-year students on Saturday, 16 November 2013.

The families were received in the main lecture hall by Rector Pere Alavedra. His welcome address provided families with insight into what it means for their children to be entering university. He also explained some of the workings of the Spanish and Catalan university systems.

Belén Zárate, the Vice Rector for the University Community, gave a brief introduction to the UIC, its study programmes and its four core values: a people-centred approach, the search for truth, social commitment and professional prestige.

The families were then invited to watch a video presentation of a day in the life of a first-year UIC student. With the theme “university is not a place, but a state of mind”, the video showed all the first-year student classes and some of the extracurricular activities offered at the UIC, such as the International Chestnut Festival and the Language Exchange.

The families were then split into groups according to degree programme and directed to the appropriate faculty, where they were encouraged to interact and discuss their concerns with the heads of the degree programmes and their children’s lecturers. For some degree programmes, a guided tour was offered of the facilities and examples of student papers and projects were exhibited. The Open House concluded with appetizers on each campus.
