UIC Participates in Vives University Network Debate League

The UIC is participating in the 9th University Debate League of the Vives University Network. This year the competition is being held at the Universitat de Barcelona until Friday, 12 April 2013.

The inaugural ceremony took place on Monday, 8 April 2013, in the main lecture hall of the historic building of the Universitat de Barcelona (UB) and was presided over by Gemma Fonrodona, the Vice Rector of Students and Linguistic Policy at the UB, and head judges Anna Albó and Pere Miquel Campos, who explained how the competition was run.

Teams from twelve universities are participating in the Debate League: the UIC, the Universitat d’Alacant, Universitat Abat Oliba CEU, the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, the Universitat de Barcelona, Universitat Jaume I, the Universitat de Lleida, the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Universitat Ramon Llull, Universitat Rovira i Virgili and the Universitat de Vic.

The objective of the Debate League is to promote the use of words by students in the university network. "Should the right to healthcare be a universal right?" is the question to be debated by the teams participating in this edition. The competition can be followed live at www.vives.org and on Twitter with the hashtag #lligadedebat. There will be morning and afternoon debate sessions and the final debate will be held on Friday, 12 April 2013, at 1 pm.

The UIC team is made up of three students: Javier Carrasco, Ester Conde and Josep Olives. This year, for the first time, the UIC has had a debate team since the beginning of the academic year. The students have therefore been training since September to compete in the Debate League with UIC professors Ricardo Jiménez and Marta Juanhuix.
