UIC Works with TV3 Telethon Foundation

On Monday, 17 December 2012, students from the UIC Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences held a charity event to raise funds for the TV3 Telethon Foundation, whose target disease this year is cancer. Carme Basté, the director of the Foundation, gave a lecture to Audiovisual Communication students.

The charity event began with a
speech titled “A Cycled Cycle of Cyclins: Who Will Break the Cycle?” given by
Dr. Clotet, a professor in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. The
guests then enjoyed a paella, during which a total of about €500 was collected
for the TV3 Telethon Foundation. The event was organized by a group of students
from the faculty, along with the Medicine and Health Sciences Student
Association (AEMiCS).

Carme Basté, the director of the Foundation,
also spoke to Journalism and Audiovisual Communication students at the UIC
Faculty of Communication Sciences.

During the lecture, Basté, the former programming director
of Televisió de
Catalunya, the public
television network of Catalonia, analysed the current television panorama. She
gave her personal take on the changes that have led to the proliferation of
screens of all kinds, the ground shared by the public and private sectors, and
the challenges this presents for the people responsible for daily programming. Basté maintained a very lively
dialogue with the students and spoke about her role as the director of the
Foundation.

Basté has been a member of staff at Televisió de
Catalunya since 1983.
She first worked on the news service as the director of the Midday News and the
Weekend News. She was also responsible for special programmes, specifically
large-format programmes such as election night coverage.

During the dialogue with
students, Basté also discussed her past at TV3
and shared her expectations about the profession and the professional future of
today's students, who will soon have to enter the job market.

The TV3 Telethon is a charity
project run by Televisió de Catalunya and the TV3 Telethon Foundation that focuses on raising funds
for scientific research into diseases that currently have no definitive cure.
