UIC's ESARQ School of Architecture Staff and Alumni Awarded Prizes in Different Categories at 9th AJAC Awards

On Friday, 24 October 2014, the awards ceremony was held for the 9th edition of the Young Architects Group of Catalonia (AJAC) Awards, which took place at the Santa Mònica Arts Centre in Barcelona. This year, several academics and alumni from the Universitat Internacional de Catalunya (UIC) were awarded prizes in different categories.

The Arquitectura-G group, comprising Jonathan Arnabat, Jordi Ayala-Bril, Aitor Fuentes and Igor Urdampilleta, all of whom are either ESARQ academics or alumni, won in the Implemented Works: Architecture category for their project “Casa Luz”.

Tomeu Ramis, who directed this year’s Vertical Workshop and is a Projects Professor at the ESARQ School of Architecture, formed part of the Flexoarquitectura group that won in both the Non-Implemented Works: Architecture category for its project “Autarchy” and in the Implemented Works: Interior Design category for its project “NU”.

Josep Camps, who was also a Projects Professor at the ESARQ School of Architecture last year, formed part of the Arquitecturia group that won in the Non-Implemented Works: Urban Planning category for its project “Permeable City”, while former UIC student Larratz Domínguez won in the Non-Implemented Works: Final Projects category for his project “Claro en el bosque”.

The 9th AJAC Awards took place within the framework of the mARQet initiative, which was held at the Santa Mònica Arts Centre. The awards ceremony was attended by both past and present winners, in addition to key figures such as Ferran Mascarell, the Catalan Minister of Culture; Antoni Vives, the Third Deputy Mayor of Barcelona; Sara Jaurrieta, the Councillor for the district of Ciutat Vella; Vicente Guallart, the Chief Architect of Barcelona City Council; and Lluís Comerón, the President of the Architects’ Association of Catalonia (COAC).

The AJAC, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, held the 9th edition of the biannual AJAC Awards in order to identify and acknowledge the best works by young architects. Prizes were awarded in the categories of Implemented Works, Non-Implemented Works, Final Projects and Theoretical Research in the field of architecture, all of which provide an accurate reflection of the professional activities of young architects in Catalonia. Several panels made up of leading figures were convened in order to reach an impartial verdict on the prize winners, who will have their work promoted and published by the AJAC and take part in its conferences and seminars.
