University Debate League Prepares Its Arguments
The UIC students that form part of the group that will participate in the 9th University Debate League have started exploring this edition's topic, i.e. the right to universal healthcare, through two sessions with experts.
"Should the right to healthcare be a universal
right?" is the question to be addressed by the groups participating in the
Debate League, which will be held from 8 to 12 April 2013, at the Universitat
de Barcelona.
A total of fourteen universities will be participating in this year's
competition.
In the first term of the school year, the members of
the debate team received help from Prof. Xipell on debating techniques during
two-hour sessions held once every two weeks. The next step is for the students
to prepare their arguments by listening to experts with different opinions on
the topic to be debated.
On 24 January 2013, the first speaker was Dr. Nicolás
Ramírez, a
psychiatrist at Hospital San Rafael in Barcelona and the clinical director of
the Integrated Adult Psychiatry Unit (UIPA), who spoke about the right to
healthcare from the perspective of the healthcare system.
José Ignacio del Cacho, a professor of
Administrative Law in the UIC Faculty of Legal and Political Sciences, gave the
other lecture on the legal perspective later in the afternoon.
In this edition, the participating students come from
three different faculties: Josep Olives, Javier Carasso and
Alejandro Arraut are in the second year of the law programme; Carolina Hayes is in the
first year of humanities and cultural studies; and Claudia Invernon, Ester
Conde and María Nolla are in the first year of business studies. The professors
responsible for preparing the students are Ricardo
Jiménez and Marta Juanhuix.
