Visit to world heritage sites in the city of Barcelona

Students taking a subject entitled “The Mediterranean: A Shared Heritage”, taught by Mohammed Elrazzaz, recently explored world heritage sites in the city of Barcelona via a cultural tour that took them through the Roman quarter, the Jewish quarter, the medieval quarter and the modernist quarter.

Students were able to learn about tangible and intangible heritage in person, while guided by professor Elrazzaz, and also gained entrance to UNESCO’S ‘Memory of the World Programme’.   The concepts discussed during the visit included the floral games (jocs florals), sardana dancing, human towers (castellers), debates (tertúlies) and Colonial-style houses built by people who travelled to the Americas and then returned home (cases d’indians).

The highlights of the tour included the Modernist buildings on Passeig de Gràcia, artwork in Plaça Catalunya, the Quatre Gats café, the old city walls and the Roman aqueduct, Sant Felip Neri square, Santa María del Mar, the Temple of Augustus and Casa Xifré.
