When dance reminds Us of who and what We are

On Friday, 20 February 2015, the SARX research group invited the dancer, choreographer and dance teacher Àngels Margarit to give a talk, “The Experience of Corporeality from the Perspective of Contemporary Dance”.

In 1985, the renowned dancer and choreographer Àngels Margarit founded the Mudanzas dance company, which boasts 30 years of experience and enjoys great prestige within Spain and internationally. Margarit herself has won the Government of Catalonia’s National Dance Prize on three separate occasions (1984, 1986 and 1999), along with the City of Barcelona Prize for the Performing Arts (1993) and the Spanish National Dance Prize (2010).

In her talk, Margarit expanded on the idea of an intelligence or wisdom that comes from the body and is capable of communicating meaning through an unwritten language. By drawing on different elements of her work as a choreographer, she gave an insight into her personal artistic evolution and her way of understanding the relationships that exist between a body in movement and the surrounding space. Within this category she also included urban space, where she has worked with non-professional performers on projects related to urban choreography and anthropology. “Dance reminds us of who and what we are. It’s a non-verbal form of communication”, Margarit asserted.

At the end of her talk, Margarit invited questions from the audience. “In the West, we’re used to seeing very young, energetic bodies on stage. But dance is not gymnastics, which makes it an appropriate language even for older people or those who are injured or disabled", the dancer concluded.
