Practicum II
Other languages of instruction: Catalan, English
Introduction
The aim of external academic placements is to enable students to apply and complement the knowledge acquired during the master's degree, and to foster the acquisition of skills that will prepare them for professional activities, facilitate their employability and foster their capacity for entrepreneurship. The external academic internships of the master's degree will be linked to the students' access profile and their professional competences.
Practicum II lasts 2 weeks in palliative care centers and 1 week in clinical simulation at UIC Barcelona and is located in the 2nd semester.
Pre-course requirements
It is required to have taken the courses of the first semester of the master's degree.
Objectives
● To train students in the Palliative Care (PC) model based on multidimensional care through interdisciplinary teamwork.
● To provide students with the development of skills, knowledge and methods of team intervention for the adequate detection and relief of suffering through the clinical control of symptoms, emotional, social and spiritual needs in advanced patients and their families, according to their professional profile.
● To train students to develop a comprehensive PC programme in the home, outpatient and hospital setting.
● To provide students with solid training in relation to the care potential of the health system's devices in order to optimize palliative care.
● To offer students techniques for appropriate communication with the person at the end of life and their family in order to be able to manage highly complex situations.
● To provide students with the necessary tools to have an interdisciplinary vision of the end-of-life situation.

Syllabus
Stays in specific palliative care teams (hospital, socio-healthcare or home care). They will be face-to-face in the real clinical environment of centres collaborating with the Master's Degree. In the Palliative Care team placement block, students will observe the dynamics of the expert interdisciplinary team, participating in patient visits, interviews with relatives and in both care and teaching sessions in a real clinical practice environment.
Clinical Simulation: compulsory attendance at UIC Barcelona. For one week students will participate in the simulation laboratories at UIC Barcelona. This attendance and simulation activities will allow them to interact with the working tools, through practical demonstrations of the theoretical knowledge acquired and briefing. In the field of simulation, students will work on paradigmatic situations in Palliative Care (clinical care, communication, patient/family accompaniment, etc.), allowing them to train practical skills in simulated environments.
This week at UIC Barcelona (Campus Sant Cugat) will take place from 1 to 5 July 2025 in the afternoon.
Teaching and learning activities
In person
Stay in specific Palliative Care teams
Clinical Simulation (25 hours)
Preparation of the internship portfolio (autonomous work): the result of observation, accompaniment and reflection through tutorials.
Group and/or individual tutorials: All students will have an academic tutor who will accompany them in tutorials to carry out reflective work on their learning in the practice environment. All this work will be integrated in a work placement portfolio where students will have to demonstrate the achievement of the objectives agreed in the tutorials.
Evaluation systems and criteria
In person
Preparation of the internship portfolio (autonomous work). Reflection on the internship. The percentage assigned will be 60%.
Report issued by the clinical tutor (placement tutor) in relation to attendance and the acquisition of the learning objectives associated with the competences. The percentage assigned to this assessment system will be 10%.
Report issued by the academic tutor on competences and acquisition of the learning objectives associated with the competences. The percentage assigned to this assessment system will be 10%.
Clinical simulation activity: Students will be assessed during the clinical simulation activities by assessing skills, knowledge and attitudes. The percentage assigned to this assessment system will be 20%.
