PRESENTATION
The subject of Urbanism trains the student in the area of the urban project, providing the necessary vision on the design of public space. Through the (theoretical and practical) study of references, the student reflects on the technical and compositional relationships between the elements of a public space project.
Pre-course requirements
Students can enrol for the Urban Design 4 course once they have passed Urban Design courses 1, 2 and 3.
Objectives

Deepen the concepts acquired in Urbanism 2 and 3 and apply the methodologies in the practical exercise to be developed.

Provide instruments and methodological bases to develop the design of open space in consolidated urban contexts and peri-urban landscape.

Know and integrate the main compositional and sustainability concepts in the integration of the elements of public space

Expand knowledge of the main experiences of urbanization projects carried out in the local and international context.

Learning outcomes of the subject
At the end of the course the student:
- Identifies, conceptualizes and synthesizes the most significant open spaces in his/her proposal through diagrams.
- Acquires the basic notions to face the design of landscape recognizing the main variables: topography, drainage, solar orientation, artificial lighting and vegetation.
- He/she obtains knowledge about some specific materials of the urbanization works such as pavements, urban furniture and vegetation, and knows how to apply them according to the type of project he/she carries out.
- Achieves control of the most relevant tools for the representation of the contents studied and use various scales to prepare the required documents.
- Builds a reasoned reflection on the project decisions adopted in the different scales of work and is able to link them with the rest of the content studied in the technical areas.

Introduction to the public space project. Concepts and references.
Criteria for the design of the free space:
- Types of public and private open spaces. Project concepts and strategies
- Integration of public space in the context
- Paving: arrangement and composition rules
- Vegetation: arrangement and composition rules
- Topography: natural and created by the project. accessibility
- Management and control of rainwater and drainage systems.
- Urban furniture: forms of composition and social behavior
- Perception of open space environments
Teaching and learning activities
In person
The teaching of Urban Planning 4 is carried out in a continuous workshop format where theoretical and practical learning is integrated. The following methodological steps are followed:
- Reading and conceptualization of the types of free spaces to develop. Review of composition and organization criteria.
- Schematic definition of the main variables that affect the public space project.
- Analysis of the organization of public space considering the nearby context, compositional criteria and relationships between the elements of vegetation, paving, topography and furniture
- Reading and understanding the perceptual results of space
- Understanding the links generated between the use of materials, the functionality of space and organization.

Evaluation systems and criteria
In person
Totally face to face modality at the classroom.
The evaluation will be continuous and the ability to express in a synthetic and organized way the contents corresponding to each one of the steps followed in the Workshop will be assessed. The assimilation of the theoretical contents, the reference models and the instrumental bases and their application to the open space project will be especially considered.
The evaluation of the Practical Workshop represents 100% of the final grade.
It is considered essential to be able to pass the subject:
• Attendance at workshops. Absences must always be justified and can never exceed, as a whole, 15% of the school day. If this condition is not met, the student will not be able to continue the course.
• Deliver an A4 format dossier according to the guidelines given and reach a positive evaluation.
The course is presented as a workshop and therefore the active participation of the student in the debates will be valued.
