Alberto T. Estévez: “The cities of the future are biophilic”
Professor Alberto T. Estévez, UIC Barcelona School of Architecture, gave a lecture on “21st Century Cities: Biophilia and Sustainability,” in the session organised by the Faculty of Humanities with Cases Singulars, as part of Town Planning Day. His lecture focused on the union between architecture and the love of nature
“Since the end of 19th century, nature has been present as a source of inspiration in architecture, design or urbanism.” This is how Alberto T. Estévez, professor and researcher for the UIC Barcelona School of Architecture, began his presentation, in which he explained how biophilia, love for nature, can change our way of life. Estévez insisted that “we must learn from trees” and create self-sufficient cities that are in communion with the surrounding environment.
The professor spoke about the challenge facing 21st century cities: “Great ecological and social imbalances go hand in hand and must be resolved together.” This challenge can be solved with biodiversity in cities, creating an environment based on biolearning so that life may nest in urban spaces. In this line, Estévez presented elements that can be used in urbanism so that life might grow, and sustainability improve.
The professor and researcher also commented on the importance of imitating natural forms in designs and taking advantage of the resources from our environment to cover urban needs, without having to resort to waste or pollution. With proposals such as bioluminescent plants for city lighting or bioreactors to create clean energy, Estévez showed that biolearning can transform the world, and pointed out that “we must integrate biology and the digital world in cities to create a biophilic city.”
This lecture took place on the Barcelona Campus, as part of the Town Planning Day, and is part of the lecture series organised jointly by the Faculty of Humanities and Cases Singulars.
