The event took place on Thursday, 27 November, in the AXA Auditorium Barcelona, and organised by the Barcelona College of Physicians (CoMB), in which the professional career of 53 physicians and four healthcare teams from the regions of Barcelona was recognised.

Among the professionals recognised for their excellence, values and quality in professional activity is Dr Carmen Muñoz-Almagro, professor and lecturer for the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. 

She holds an undergraduate degree in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Navarra, a PhD from the Universitat de Barcelona and is a specialist in Microbiology and Clinical Parasitology. She currently manages the Department of Molecular Microbiology at the Hospital Sant Joan de Déu in Barcelona, centre of reference in paediatrics, and president of the Catalan Society of Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology. She combines these positions with her role as a lecturer for subjects such as Infectious Diseases and Microbiology in the bachelor's degree in Medicine at UIC Barcelona.

The research conducted by Dr Muñoz-Almagro focuses on vaccine-preventable infectious diseases with high prevalence in paediatrics, diagnostic innovation in Clinical Microbiology and the study of the human microbiome. In these fields, she leads Group 57 of the Epidemiology and Public Health Networking Biomedical Research Centre (CIBERESP) and coordinates the Paediatric Infectious Diseases Research Group at the Sant Joan de Déu Research Institute. She has published over 180 academic articles, supervised 12 doctoral theses and led over 40 research projects at the national and international level.

The Professional Excellence Awards of the Official Barcelona College of Physicians have been given since 2004 and a jury made up of renown physicians oversees naming the professionals and healthcare teams that stand out for their exemplary career of top-quality practice and for representing the values that define medical professionals.
