Clàudia López: “Talking about mental health is more normal among young people”

As part of the World Mental Health Day, lecturer for the University's Psychology area and psychologist collaborating with Support - University Psychology and Psychiatry Clinic stressed that mental health is no longer a taboo subject among young people

Clàudia López pointed out that among young people, talking about what happens to them emotionally has become much more normal when compared to older generations who have more difficulty with this type of communication in their day to day because their experience rises from very different historical and social circumstances.

At a time when the numbers of mental disorders are getting worse, the specialist believes that mental health care should be rethought and focused on prevention and promotion. She also stated that, despite the progress that has taken place in recent years, much remains to be done individually, socially and institutionally. In this line, López emphasises the importance of asking for help when feeling bad, cultivating close relationships, enjoying an activity, getting enough sleep and developing healthy eating habits and physical exercise.

“Despite being a multifactorial phenomenon, one must take into account the obvious relationship between using mobile devices and reduced sleep hours with mental disorders.” For this reason, Clàudia López stressed that “we must teach on adversity and learn to see what is upsetting as a tool to become better.”
