Cyprus and Malta: A Comparative Analysis of Accession to the Commonwealth

On Friday, 23 March 2012, María Mut, a professor in the Faculty of Economic and Social Sciences, was invited by the Strasbourg Institute of Political Studies to give a lecture on relations between the European Union and the Commonwealth.

Mut's lecture, which was titled “A comparative analysis of the accession of Malta and Cyprus
to the European Union and to the Commonwealth”,
focused on a
comparative analysis of the legal requirements for entry into the Commonwealth
and the European Union of two members that have both organizations in common:
the Republics of Malta and Cyprus.

 

Her
lecture also analysed the political and social impact of these accessions. Mut
addressed aspects such as the Turkey-Cyprus conflict and Malta's
euroscepticism prior to becoming a member of the European Union.
