David Alvarez, master’s degree in Cultural Management alumni, new Councillor for Culture of Oviedo
The new councillor studied at UIC Barcelona in 2003 and began his professional career as a cultural manager at L’Auditori de Barcelona thanks to the master’s degree
David Álvarez, 2003 University master’s degree in Cultural Management alumni, is the new Councillor for Culture of the City of Oviedo and president of the Municipal Cultural Foundation. Álvarez joined the team of Alfredo Canteli, mayor of Oviedo since 2019, to promote the city’s cultural policy, especially a reference of classical music.
Fond of classical music, art and humanities in general, Álvarez remembers his time at UIC Barcelona in a very positive way: “The programme put me in contact with the culture world, which allowed me to develop relationships and contacts with different sectors and professionals. And he added: “The master’s degree was the point that kickstarted my career in cultural management and has been a key element in reaching where I am today.”
Álvarez emphasises the university’s role as a place that is not only for receiving an education but as a place of meeting, coexistence and listening, where you work as a team. According to the new councillor, those team dynamics developed at the university helped him to acquire skills that have been fundamental for managing people in organisations like the one he now leads.
David Álvarez began his career in the cultural sector at L’Auditori de Barcelona as cultural manager of General Services and of Educational Service in 2003 while he was studying the master’s degree at UIC Barcelona.
The master’s degree in Cultural Management at UIC Barcelona offers students practical knowledge to start a career as cultural managers in organisations in the cultural and creative industries and has trained more than 850 students from 74 different nationalities.
