The documentary “Brazadas” by UIC Barcelona nominated at the Milano International FICTS Fest

  • Brazadas, a documentary about ALS produced by UIC Barcelona, has been nominated for three different awards in the SPORT AND SOCIETY section: the Guirlande d’Honneur 2023, the Mention d’Honneur 2023 and the Special Awards 2023

  • The awards ceremony will be held on 11 November at the Auditorium Testori, in Palazzo Lombardia, as the Worldwide Final of Television, Film, Communication and Sports Culture in the “World FICTS Challenge”

The documentary Brazadas, produced by the Universitat Internacional de Catalunya (UIC Barcelona), has been nominated in the 40th edition of the Milano International FICTS Fest. Brazadas is about the challenge taken by swimmer Daniel Rossinés, who swam around the island of Menorca with the aim of raising funds for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

The festival is organised by the International Sport Movies TV Federation (FICTS), which has 130 member countries and is recognised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), an institution that promotes the values of sport through images. The international jury, make up of seven representatives of cinema, television, media, sport and culture, will award the best productions that “have played a significant role in promoting   the sports image on screen and the cultural and ethical values of sports.”

The film Brazadas, covers the Upside Down solidarity challenge in which Rossinés swam more than 130 kilometres parallel to the coast of the island of Menorca with more than 65,000 strokes in one week in June 2021. The funds raised by the documentary were donated to Luzón Foundation, whose mission is to improve the quality of life for ALS patients and their families, as well as promote research for the future treatment or cure of the disease.

The Upside Down project was created in 2020 to raise awareness and funds for research against the disease through sports challenges. Previously in 2020, Rossinés swam along the coast of Catalonia, from Portbou (Girona) to Las Casas de Alcanar, in only 24 days.

Brazadas won the Esport i Societat award in the BCN Sports Film Festival celebrated last February at the Joan Antoni Samaranch Olympic and Sports Museum, in a meeting point between the world of cinema, sport, politics and society.
