Dr. Martos Moderates Roundtable Session on Interdisciplinary Teams to Mark International Nurses Day
On Monday, 12 May 2014, Dr. Àngels Martos, the Assistant Dean for Research and Teaching Staff in the UIC Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, moderated a roundtable session titled «From Discipline to Interdisciplinary Team» as part of the conference «Nursing Discipline: The Art of Caring», which was organized by IDCSalud to mark International Nurses Day.
Taking part in the session were nurses Brigida Bueno Llanes, Marcos Gayoso Novas and Mónica García Montero, Dr. Galdina Valls Borruel, auxiliary nurse Susana Iglesias Blanco and physiotherapist Eugenia Martínez Lucas.
Interdisciplinary teamwork is becoming an increasingly common practice due to a paradigm shift in the doctor-patient relationship that focuses on the patient as a whole rather than the disease itself. Although this way of working is becoming more common, coordinating the different specialists and professionals can often prove difficult.
The moderator raised questions about interdisciplinary teams in the hospital environment. Why change the form of organization? What exactly is involved and not involved in interdisciplinary work? What are the advantages and disadvantages of the practice? Who should be part of these team? How much work should be required from each team member?
The conclusions shared by everyone taking part in the roundtable session can be summed up in the following keys to successful interdisciplinary teamwork: base your work on scientific evidence, share knowledge of each discipline among team members, achieve good communication based on respect and trust, take the opinion of the patient and the family into account, and agree on an individualized care plan by establishing priorities.
