Eric Emerson Gives an Open Broadcast for the Postgraduate Programme in Mental Illness

On Friday, 4 April 2014, Professor Eric Emerson gave a talk to students from the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences' Postgraduate Programme in Mental Illness and Behavioural Disorders in Disabled People. Professor Emerson is a leading international expert on behavioural disorders in children and adolescents.

The talk, which was broadcasted free-to-air to 200 people throughout Spain and lasted for around three hours, tackled issues such as the importance of social intervention and prevention for children and adolescents. Specifically, Professor Emerson looked at the struggle against child poverty, as disadvantaged environments can contribute to the development of mental illness in children and adolescents. According to him, prevention relies on the training of professionals and families, and he illustrated this point by referring to a successful pilot project carried out in Australia at the University of Sydney, where he teaches.

Pere Rueda, the programme coordinator, expressed his satisfaction at having been able to collaborate with Professor Emerson. The professor is a researcher and lecturer at the Faculty of Health and Medicine at the University of Lancaster in the north of England, and a visiting professor at the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Sydney in Australia. He has also taught at the universities of Manchester and Canterbury, which are also located in England.
