Head of Department Jiménez Piernas Explores Challenges Facing EU in Crisis of State in Africa

On Monday, 5 May 2014, Head of Department Carlos Jiménez Piernas gave the lecture «New Risks and Challenges Facing the European Union: The Crisis of State in Africa» as part of the continuing education lecture series organized by the Faculty of Law throughout the academic year.

In his lecture, the speaker ran through the key aspects of the current problems posed by immigration from North Africa and how the government is dealing with it.

Jiménez said, “The situation in North Africa affects countries such as the United States. One of the European countries that has been involved in the problems in Africa is France. Many of the countries are former French colonies and are therefore a concern for the country. In this respect, Spain is following in France’s footsteps”.

With reference to African conflicts, he said, “There is great political instability, which has given rise to some recent situations such as the civil war in the Central African Republic and the Arab Spring”.

The speaker also highlighted the role of the United Nations in this issue and said, “The measures taken by the UN up to now have been conservative and have aimed to save the state at all costs, as it tried to do in Mali”.

Carlos Jiménez Piernas is a Head of Department at the Universidad de Alicante and the Universidad de Alcalá. He is an author and editor of different books related to international law and an advisor to several governments.
