Interdisciplinary Humanities Workshop «Thinks, Speaks and Creates» with the Body

The Faculty of Humanities' Interdisciplinary Workshop, held each January, is aimed at students of all levels in the UIC's Bachelor's Degree Programme in Humanities and Cultural Studies. Thematically, the workshop deals with issues that arise in some of the compulsory subjects of the official programme. This year's workshop was called "Thinking, Speaking and Creating with the Body: A Humanistic Approach".

One of the main aims of the Interdisciplinary Humanities Workshop, organized together with the SARX research group, is to encourage teamwork and the exchange of knowledge and experiences among students taking different subjects. This year, the core subjects linked to the workshops were Classical Culture, Modern Culture, Aesthetics and Contemporary Art.

The five-day workshop was led by professors and professionals in the subject matter. After giving a conceptual overview for each session, they worked by using examples and hands-on activities. In addition to professors in the UIC Faculty of Humanities, other participants included Cristóbal Pera, an Emeritus Professor of Surgery at the Universitat de Barcelona; Sergi Faustino, a dancer, performance artist and choreographer; and Martín García Cros, a portrait artist for the Spanish royal family.

The first four days of the workshop were organized chronologically, so that each day dealt with a different historical period: the ancient world, the medieval world, the modern world and the contemporary world. The last day addressed the study of the face and portraiture.

SARX, the Anthropology of Embodiment Research Group headed by Dr. Xavier Escribano, a professor in the UIC Faculty of Humanities, aims to offer a critical review of the dominant paradigms underlying both the natural and human sciences in the understanding of the human body and to establish the bases for the creation of a new integrated model in which many different scientific, humanistic and artistic perspectives are brought together and mutually enriched.
