International experts participate in a workshop at UIC Barcelona on the ethical use of AI
The workshop was organised by the Ethics, Technology and Society research group of the Faculty of Humanities, which aims to develop an application for teaching civic behaviour in the use of artificial intelligence
The research group Ethics, Technology and Society of the Faculty of Humanities of UIC Barcelona, led by Magdalena Bosch, organised a workshop on the ethical use of artificial intelligence (AI) on 14 June at the University as part of its Llavor project, awarded by the Agency for Management of University and Research Grants (AGAUR).
Various international AI experts spoke during the event: Tom Harrison from the University of Birmingham and director of the Jubilee Centre for Character and Virtues; Mark Coeckelbergh from the University of Vienna, member of several international organisations that support the construction of policies in the area of robotics and AI; and Oscar Yecid from the University of San Buenaventura (Bogotá), an expert in education and new technologies and Marcel Cano, lecturer of the Faculty of Science, Technology and Engineering at the University of Vic, expert in ethics applied to technoscience.
The workshop provided several useful tips on the ethical use of AI to gain understanding of the resource and improve good practice. In addition to enjoying the expert conferences, the participants were able to take part in the Q&A sessions after each exhibition to solve any doubts about the topic and generate debate.
The conference was aimed at all researchers, lecturers and students interested in the subject and was an opportunity for the research group of the Faculty of Humanities to learn new perspectives about AI. “The international experts who have participated have contributed a lot to our project, proposing lines of work in the ethical use of AI. From the ethics of virtue and the experience of governance advice in the European Union, through the theoretical foundation of ethics, to more practical applications in education and its own resources,” explained Magdalena Bosch, principal researcher of the project.
This project is one of the Llavor projects achieved by UIC Barcelona as part of the 2023 Knowledge Industry Grants (IdC) call. The research group led by Magdalena Bosch, philosophy lecturer and researcher, aims to develop an application for teaching civic behaviour in the use of artificial intelligence (AI). Miquel Bastons, Wendy R. Simon, Gabriel Fernández, Abel Miró, Ferran Sánchez and Josep del Hierro are also members of the group.
