On Wednesday, 8 January 2014, Laura Ester Ramos, the goalkeeper for the CN Sabadell and the Spanish national water polo teams and winner of a silver medal in the 2012 summer Olympics and a gold medal in the 2013 World Aquatics Championships, was invited to speak by Sergi Solé, a journalist for the Spanish sports newspaper Mundo Deportivo and a professor on the UIC Master's Degree Programme in Sports Journalism.
The world water polo champion, considered the second-best water polo player in the world, addressed students in the Master’s Degree and Postgraduate Programmes in Sports Journalism. During the talk, she shared the beginnings of her interest and passion for water polo. “It all started when I was twelve and went from swimming to forming part of a women’s water polo team”, she said.
Laura Ester explained that water polo is a very demanding sport, to which she dedicates four and a half hours of training a day in winter and an average of six hours a day in summer. At the same time, it is difficult to make a living from the sport. “That’s only possible if you’re part of the Spanish national team”, the player said.
Thanks to her successes with the national team as well as her club team in the last two years (in 2013 Club Sabadell won the Spanish Super Cup, the Spanish Liga, the Queen’s Cup, the European Cup and the European Super Cup), the goalkeeper said that more people are now familiar with the sport and talk more about it.
