Lecturer Bernat Torres participates in a project awarded by the Grifols Foundation

Faculty of Humanities Lecturer Bernat Torres is one of the members of the Neuroscience, Philosophy and Education project of the University Master’s Degree in Neuroscience at UAB, which involves philosophy lecturers who help guide the ethical dimension of intervention and analyse how issues such as pain are treated

“Neuroscience, Philosophy and Education” is a project that brings people with neurological problems to the classrooms, to create a dialogue between patient and student. It is a meeting for patients with neurological injuries to talk about their diseases with scientists in-training from the University Master’s Degree in Neuroscience at UAB. The project involves philosophy lecturers who help guide the ethical dimension by observing how issues such as human dignity, pain or disease are dealt with.

Torres explained how “the union between neuroscience and philosophy allows us to have, channel and interpret dialogue with individuals in very different and always vulnerable living conditions.” Then he added, “Moreover, the fact of participating in the training of future professionals empowers the patient.”

The UAB University Master’s Degree in Neurosciences offers this project a physical location to hold meetings and coordinate the institutions involved. This initiative allows students to see these patients in first person, normalise their situation and learn the real-life conditions they study in class. The patients have spinal cord injuries of different levels of severity and are treated at the Guttmann University Clinic.
