Lecturers Gabriel Fernández, Anna Pou and Josep Corcó reflect on the evolution of art, science and technology in the series Les Veus de la República [Voices of the Republic]

The session is part of the series Les Veus de la Republica, a space for reflection, discussion and promotion of critical thinking in Casa Orlandai

On 22 February, Faculty of Humanities lecturers Gabriel Fernández, Anna Pou and Josep Corcó visited Casa Orlandai to participate as speakers in the session of Les Veus de la Republica, moderated by Elsa Corominas. The round table discussion titled: “Art, science and technology: from the cave to digital art,” ended with a space for dialogue with the attendees.

Dr Gabriel Fernández began the session, talking about the evolution of art, science and technology, explaining how these disciplines reflect the evolution of human subjectivity and its structures of consciousness. Fernández explained how perspective consciousness is structured, broken down into three dimensions of being: truth, goodness and beauty. He also stressed the challenge of integrating these dimensions and proposed mystique as the key to this process.

Later Dr Josep Corcó spoke and stressed the small difference between the methods of science and art, since both are based on the trial-and-error method. “Intuition and creativity have a remarkable presence in both scientific and artistic trials,” Corcó said. He added that the process of elimination is done in both fields thanks to internal and external criticism.

Lecturer and art historian Anna Pou closed the presentation by reviewing the history of art, starting from cave art and ending with digital art. The lecturer concluded that art, science and technology have gone, go and will always go hand in hand.
