Marc Masip: «New Technologies Are Highly Advanced but Are Controlled Very Little»
Psychologist Marc Masip was the speaker in one of the last sessions of the «Edu_aldia» conference cycle. Masip spoke about the use of new technologies and the influence they have on people's lives in his lecture «Disconnect To Connect: Learning to Disconnect from Screens and to Connect to Real Life».
Marc Masip, the founder and Director of the company Desconecta@, was very clear when he spoke about the power these new technologies have in people's everyday lives. He said, “Spain has one of the highest Internet addiction rates in Europe (more than 20% of teens are addicted compared to the European average of 12%)”. He went on to explain the importance of disconnecting to connect, as highlighted by the title of his lecture.
As he explained, “Addiction to new technologies is at the root of many evils. You might get hooked because you have low self-esteem, but in the end, you can find it affects your life. Tools as useful as mobile phones and social networks can become a problem when used in excess". The big problem is the speed of it all. He said, “New technologies are highly advanced, but are controlled very little”.
For this reason, Desconecta@ has created a psycho-educational programme with the aim of “identifying inappropriate behaviour and learning strategies to change it by pursuing a future that is more real and better structured”. Masip mentioned the big problem that needs to be solved. He said, “People improve through experience, but screens actually do away with experiences, so it's hard for people to improve. Screens produce young people with little initiative”.
The last lecture in the conference cycle will be held on Wednesday, 11 June 2014. The speaker will be Pere Marqués, who has a PhD in Education. He will speak about the keys to a successful bimodal curriculum.
