María Astray Advises Students on Role of State Attorney

On Wednesday, 30 April 2014, State Attorney María Astray delivered the lecture «A Guide to the Civil Service Exam: State Attorneys» as part of the continuing education lecture cycle organized by the Faculty of Law throughout the academic year.

In her lecture, Astray spoke in detail about the role of the state attorney. She said, “The state attorney is a great unknown. His or her only client is the Spanish state, and he or she is therefore responsible for defending its interests”.

The speaker explained the differences between a state attorney and the public prosecutor. Referring to the latter, she said, “The general aim is to defend the Office of the Public Prosecutor, whereas the state attorney’s role is to defend the interests of the state; not the interests of the public, but solely those of the state. The interest is therefore always specific and non-generic”.

Lastly, Astray talked about the civil service examination and the five exercises it includes, its characteristics, requirements and how it works in general.
