UIC Barcelona receives funding from the Ministry to create an interdisciplinary network on implantology
As part of the of the State Programme for Scientific, Technical and Innovation Research 2021-2023, the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities (MCIU) - State Research Agency (AEI) has awarded a grant to Dr Xavier Gil to lead the Peri-implantitis and Implantology Thematic Network: biomaterials with bactericidal mechanisms in oral implantology.
The researchers participating in the project in the areas of Periodontics and Implantology are from nine Faculties of Dentistry: the University of Seville, the Complutense University of Madrid, the University of Granada, the Universitat de València, the Alfonso X El Sabio University, the Universitat de Barcelona, the European Miguel de Cervantes University, the University of Zaragoza and UIC Barcelona. And six Biomaterials Faculties: The Jaume I University of Castellon, the University of Seville, the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, the UIC Barcelona Bioengineering Institute of Technology (BIT) and also researchers from the Spanish Nation Research Council (CSIC). From UIC Barcelona, the team includes Dr Xavier Gil, BIT researcher and project coordinator, as well as Dr Federico Hernández-Alfaro, Dr José Nart, Dr Miquel Roig, Dr Conrado Aparicio and Dr Román Pérez, director of BIT.
As a thematic network, the aim of the project is to create a network at the national level that allows a research strategy to be defined, and also establishes stable communication between researchers in dentistry and researchers specialised in dental biomaterials, to look for different solutions to reduce infection in patients who have been treated with dental implants.
Proposed actions for the project include sharing research between the different groups, and that this sharing would result in synergies between the fields of dental practice and biomaterials. Thus, clinicians will be present in biomaterial research projects so that the research is focused on real issues. And the biomaterials research groups will study clinical issues with real examples to bring solutions closer to reality. Other proposals include organizing an interdisciplinary conference on dental materials.
The project will last two years and was the most valued network of the entire call with a rating of 9.85/10.
