UIC Barcelona School of Architecture participates in a new edition of the Accessible Commerce Without Barriers (CASBA) project
Coordinated by lecturer Enrique Rovira-Beleta, students from UIC Barcelona School of Architecture are working together with people with disabilities to analyse the physical and communication accessibility of eleven shops in Sant Gervasi
Within the framework of the CASBA project, architecture students visited shops in the commercial zone of Sant Gervasi with wheelchairs, masks and canes to raise awareness about the needs of people with disabilities. The students subsequently visited each relevant business to conduct a study to incorporate the necessary accessibility measures.
Once the analysis has been carried out, the students will offer improvement proposals to the business owners with the support of teachers from UIC Barcelona School of Architecture and the Municipal Institute of People with Disabilities (IMPD), promoter of the project with the District of Sarria-Sant Gervasi.
This methodology of teaching architecture students in direct contact with people with disabilities highlights the importance of universal design in architecture, with the aim of guaranteeing access to all the services offered by the city.
Eleven businesses have participated in the project, with the support of the Trade Association of Sant Gervasi, Barnavasi and organisations representing people with disabilities.
UIC Barcelona School of Architecture is participating in the CASBA project for the seventh consecutive year.
On the other hand, 25 architects, members of a delegation from the University and Accessibility Office of Warsaw (Poland), visited the facilities of UIC Barcelona to learn first-hand about the CASBA project. During the session, Professor Enrique Rovira-Beleta participated as a representative of UIC Barcelona, Marina Alonso from the Municipal Institute for People with Disabilities and Jaume Pla from La Salle University.
