Villanueva Analyses Adaptation of Opera to New Media at London Conference

Isabel Villanueva, the Vice Dean of the UIC Faculty of Communication Sciences, and Dr. Jaume Radigales, a teacher from Universitat Ramón Llull, presented the results of research they have carried out on the adaptation of the opera to new media at the Song, Stage and Screen VIII Conference, which took place in London from Tuesday to Thursday, 2-4 July 2013.

In their paper, “Thinking the Opera Beyond Theatres”, Villanueva and Radigales analysed the changes that have taken place in the communication of opera in recent years, mainly as a result of the new digital environment. The world of opera has been adapting to new media in an attempt to reach its audience more easily and thus increase it. Villanueva and Radigales analysed the results of this adaptation process in order to determine whether or not it really is possible to talk about an emerging market. The teachers also examined the consequences of the audiovisualization process that opera has undergone.

The Song, Stage and Screen VIII Conference, which was organized by the University of London at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, brought together reflections and critiques of historical and modern practices in musical theatre in the field of higher education and the entertainment industry. The conference also featured practical demonstrations and talks given by professionals on the study of voice, theatre actors, musical theatre directors, etc.
