WeCare Department Attends International Congress on Palliative Care

Members of the UIC's WeCare at the End-of-Life Department attended the 8th World Research Congress of the European Association for Palliative Care held in Lleida from Thursday to Saturday, 5-7 June 2014.

Around 1,200 people took part in the Congress, which accepted four communications and a research poster submitted by the Department members. Dr. Josep Porta, the Head of the Palliative Care Research Service at the Catalan Institute of Oncology (ICO), a lecturer at the UIC and the Codirector of the Department, presented the paper “Efficacy and Safety of Methadone as a Second-line Opioid for Cancer Pain”. Dr. Cristina Monforte, the Director of the UIC’s Department of Nursing and Codirector of the Department, presented the communication “Physical Impairment, Meaning in Life and the Wish to Hasten Death in Advanced Cancer Patients”.

Christian Villavicencio, a doctor at the ICO, a lecturer at the UIC and a doctoral candidate in the Department, presented the communication “Update in Neuropathic Pain in Oncology: Guidelines and Treatment”; and Montserrat Edo, a lecturer on the Master’s Degree Programme in Nursing Sciences at the UIC and doctoral candidate in the Department, presented the poster “Relational Model of Nursing Students’ Experiences of Death and Dying during their Clinical Training”.

Dr. Josep Porta also moderated one of the plenary sessions on end-of-life care.

The Congress will have a stand at the 2nd International Workshop on End-of-Life Care, the Department’s annual meeting, which is scheduled to take place in Barcelona on Friday and Saturday, 28-29 November 2014. The title of this year’s edition of the workshop is: “What Do We Say When They Say, ‘I Don’t Want to Live Like This Anymore’?”
