Xavier Baró presents the keys to the Albanian Socialist Regime of Enver Hoxha
UIC Barcelona Lecturer Xavier Baró has published Estudios sobre la Albania socialista [Studies on Socialist Albania], a book that summarises the characteristics of the socialist regime that was established in Albania after World War II.
Xavier Baró holds a PhD in History and Geography, lecturer of History at UIC Barcelona and is part of the research group GRC-History, Architecture and Design (GRHAD), which focuses its research on the history of art and cultural management. In this new book, Baró analyses the nature of the socialist regime of Enver Hoxha in Albania, taking into account its main characteristics and influences.
The Albanian socialist regime was the last to disappear in Europe, and it was not until 1991 that it fell. The book covers topics such as the political nature of the regime, religious persecution or unstable and convulsive relations with the Soviet Union. Baró highlights the relevance of the impact generated by the 11th Song Festival on the Albanian society at the time.
Through the exhibition of documents and texts shown in sessions and conferences, but never published, Baró examines the position of the Hoxha regime with the Communist Party of Spain and Eurocommunism and emphasises the importance of rhetoric in the political discourse of Albanian socialism.
Estudios sobre la Albania Socialista is the result of five years of study and research conducted at the University of Tirana and the National Library of Albania.
