Xavier Gil, new editor-in-chief of the "Biomaterials" section of the prestigious journal Materials

This appointment recognises the scientific career of the full professor and researcher at the UIC Barcelona Bioengineering Institute of Technology, an international reference in research in field of biomaterials

Since January 2023, Xavier Gil is the new editor-in-chief of the “Biomaterials” section of first-quartile journal Materials, a leading scientific publication. This appointment is a recognition of Xavier Gil’s professional career and his merits as a researcher specialising in biomaterials and tissue regeneration. This makes Gil one of the few editors-in-chief in Spain of internationally renowned publications focused on the biomaterials sector.

With a team of more than 200 editors, Gil takes on this new challenge with the aim of maintaining the scientific quality of the articles that are published and increasing the impact rate. “In recent years I have had the opportunity to publish different articles in Materials as a result of my research in biomaterials and I have also been editor for some special issues. The scientific rigor, the impeccable work of the editors and the agility of the journal in responding to the articles submitted are the main distinguishing features that characterise Materials,” Gil explained. “I am proud and very excited to take on this new role and to contribute to the growth of the publication,” he added.

Xavier Gil holds a BSc in Chemistry and a PhD in Chemistry from the Universitat de Barcelona. Throughout his career as a researcher, he has directed more than 35 European and 52 national projects in the field of tissue engineering. He has published more than 370 articles in scientific journals and has published ten books, with an h-index of 58 and more than 11,000 citations. His main research revolves around the optimisation of dental implant surfaces to improve osseointegration and bacterial infection and has obtained 16 patents. He is currently full Professor and researcher at the UIC Barcelona Bioengineering Institute of Technology.

Gil’s new position as editor-in-chief of the Biomaterials section will also allow researchers at the University, especially in areas such as dentistry, biomedicine, bioengineering or physiotherapy, to publish up to six articles a year in the journal.
