  • Collaboration project with the Spanish Red Cross NGO:

In the 2022-2023 academic year the students of the Master’s Degree in International Cooperation: Sustainable Emergency Architecture (MICSEA) participated in the International Urban Regeneration Studio initiative. They collaborated with the NGO Cruz Roja Española (The Spanish Red Cross), the Revivir El Valle community organisation, local institutions on the island of La Palma and the government of the Canary Islands. The purpose was to analyse the ongoing resettlement processes of the island and understand how the affected local communities are recovering their physical and social identity after the event, following the eruption of the La Palma volcano in September in 2021.

To do this, the students of the master’s degree were responsible for carrying out an urban, architectural and social diagnosis of two temporary resettlement projects, one of 60 m² metal container houses, modified in the municipality of Los Llanos de Aridane, and the other of prefabricated wooden houses in the municipality of El Paso. With this research programme, UIC Barcelona students presented designs to create public spaces and proposals for improvement for container housing, responding to the needs of those affected in La Palma.

The project has continued in the 2023-2024 academic year and the workshop has ended with the presentation of three proposals for public spaces that address current shortcomings and reflect the aspirations of the community. These proposals have included details on the activities that can be carried out in each space, the materials used and the implementation phases.

The UIC Barcelona initiative is a project that empowers the displaced community to participate actively in the reconstruction of their future. The proposals drawn up will serve as a basis for future actions by the public administrations and other entities involved in the recovery of La Palma..

AOD and TOSSD

Since 2020, we have included UIC Barcelona interventions in the info@od metric for monitoring Spain’s Total Official Support for Sustainable Development (TOSSD). This metric contains processes for monitoring official resources and private financing mobilised through official interventions in support of sustainable development and the SDGs, providing coherent, comparable and transparent data on the total official support of Cooperación Española (Spanish Cooperation).

Based on this information, a monitoring report on these flows is published annually and the Development Assistance Committee (DAC) of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) is reported.

We are committed to continuing to progress in our work on each of the Sustainable Development Goals, with the aim of fostering meaningful education throughout the educational institution, as well as in our city and other regions.
